What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a protective covering for your tooth. It can help restore your tooth to its normal shape and size, improving the appearance of your smile.
A crown may be recommended if you have a tooth with significant damage, wear due to decay or injury, that cannot be corrected with a filling or other restoration. A crown can also be used to attach a bridge or cover a dental implant.
A crown is custom-made to match the shape, shade, and appearance of your natural teeth so it will blend right in.
Why Do I Need a Crown?
Crowns can be used in several different circumstances to restore the appearance of a tooth. Some reasons include:
- Strengthening a tooth with a large filling
- Protecting a weak tooth from breaking
- Restoring a broken tooth
- Connecting to a bridge or implant to replace a missing tooth
- Covering a tooth that is discolored or badly shaped
Types of Crowns We Offer
There are several materials that crowns can be made from. At Hudson Family Dental, we use the following materials:
- Composite crowns: Have a natural look. They won’t chip as easily as porcelain crowns, but tend to wear more quickly from chewing.
- Porcelain crowns: Look the most natural. Porcelain crowns may chip more easily than composite, making them better suited to front teeth.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: Have a natural look while maintaining a stronger form than composite or porcelain crowns, making them a better choice for molars.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a restorative dental solution for those with a missing tooth or teeth.
The bridge contains one or more artificial teeth and covers a gap left by a missing tooth. It can be attached to the adjacent teeth using crowns or anchored with dental implants.
Dental bridges are custom-made to match the shape, color, and overall appearance of your natural teeth to fit seamlessly between your existing teeth, helping you achieve a functional, beautiful smile.
Why Do I Need a Bridge?
Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge provides the following benefits:
- Restores the function of your bite and speech that were impaired by missing teeth
- Enhances the appearance of your smile
- Prevents other teeth from shifting into the gap, leading to misalignment and bite issues
- Maintains facial shape
- Prevents additional tooth loss caused by shifting teeth and a misaligned bite
Types of Bridges We Offer
At Hudson Family Dental, we offer the following types of bridges to restore your smile:
- Traditional bridges: Used when there are natural, healthy teeth on each side of the gap. The bridge is anchored to these adjacent teeth.
- Implant-supported bridges: Used if you don’t have enough healthy teeth to support a bridge. The bridge is anchored to dental implants instead of your natural teeth.
- Resin-bonded bridges: Also known as “Maryland” bridges, this type is used for missing front teeth. The artificial teeth are fused with metal bands and cemented to the back of the natural teeth for strength.
- Cantilever bridges: Used when there are healthy teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. It is anchored to one or more natural adjacent teeth on that side.
